The key to successful maps is recognisable
elements. For example shopping centre maps that look 3D, and show the place
exactly as it looks make it a lot easier for people to read. For bushwalking
or tourist maps, it may be more important to show topography and local
features, such as fresh water, camping facilities, or the local pub.
AAAD
can produce top quality maps, for exterior or self-illuminated interior
applications, or even for hand-outs.
The example below shows a map and
cabinet designed for the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney. (Note the AAAD
designer was working for another company then).
The
wall mounted cabinet. Symbols for things such as the toilets, escalters
and lifts were copied exactly from the buildings signage. The QVB logo
was included as part of the map's graphics.
The picture at left shows carving details, map symbols and 3D look. The wood carving pattern was produced by photographing the buildings stonework, then scanning the photograph, converting the image to lineart, and then touching up and reproducing the lines to form the designed pattern. A full-size pattern was printed out for the wood carvers to work from.
